Once again we are at the turning point of the seasons, with the promise of longer and warmer days ahead. The turning of the year can bring hope but can also be difficult as it’s a reminder that the world is still turning.

At Haven House we have beautiful grounds, which have been awakening with bright daffodils and crocuses. The Magnolia trees are beginning to bloom and buds are visible on other blossom trees.

This time of year is famous in Japan for its copious cherry blossom trees, which are revered. These trees hold meaning in Japanese culture for their beautiful but short-lived flowers, called Sakura, which are both symbols of the beauty of life and reminders of its fleetingness.

When we consider this fleetingness, we can understand the importance of faith based celebration days; Eid and Easter are two such points of reflection falling close together this year.

We also have culturally significant days like Mother’s Day this week and Father’s Day following in June. These days can feel different for everyone – gentle reminders for some, hard to bear days for others. We may want to ignore them altogether. There is no right or wrong way to feel at these times; we may wish to spend time alone with our thoughts, create a new ritual, or to share some stories with family and friends.

Whichever way feels right for you, we hope that you are able to be gentle with yourself at this time.
