Inspirational young fundraiser Lily surprised by Zayn Malik on BBC’s The One Show We are incredibly proud to see young fundraiser Lily Blackburn recognised on BBC’s The One Show after raising more than £75,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice through a series of inspiring fundraising challenges. As part of the programme’s One Big Thank You series, the 13-year-old received a surprise appearance from former One Direction star Zayn Malik in recognition of the extraordinary difference she has made to seriously ill children and families supported by Haven House. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Autism at the age of two and told she may never walk independently, Lily has continually defied expectations through her courage, determination and generosity. Lily began fundraising for Haven House when she was just seven years old, choosing to support her local children’s hospice. Since then, she has taken on a series of ambitious challenges, including climbing Mount Snowdon, helping to raise vital funds for children and families we support across North East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire. In her earliest fundraising challenges, Lily relied on a walking frame to complete her walks. Years of perseverance and physiotherapy support have helped her build the strength and confidence to complete her latest challenge completely unaided - an incredible milestone in her journey. Speaking about the experience, Lily said: “Haven House means so much to me because I know how important care, kindness and support can be for children and families going through difficult times. When I started fundraising, I just wanted to help make a difference, and I never imagined the journey it would take me on. “Being recognised on The One Show was such a special and emotional moment for me. Zayn was incredibly kind and made me feel so proud of what I had achieved. It is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I feel incredibly proud to support Haven House and I hope my fundraising can continue helping even more children and families in the future.” Justin Derbyshire, Chief Executive of Haven House Children’s Hospice, added: “Everyone at Haven House is immensely proud of Lily and everything she has achieved. Her courage and determination are truly inspiring, and she continues to touch the lives of so many people around her. “Lily’s story is a powerful reminder of the compassion and community that makes our work possible. The funds she has raised will help us continue providing specialist care and support to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and their families, whenever they need us most.” We currently support around 450 children and families through specialist nursing care, therapies, respite and end-of-life care. As a charity, we rely heavily on fundraising and community support to continue being there for families across our communities when they need us most.
