Trustees

Haven House is governed by a Board of Trustees who take responsibility for the overall health and strategic direction of the hospice. Our Trustees give their time and expertise for free, attending quarterly Board meetings and supporting our sub-committees - Finance and Resources; Clinical Governance; Service Development; Health and Safety and Premises; and Income Generation and Marketing.

Extraordinary in an ordinary day - our roadmap for the next three years, setting out how we will achieve more for our children and families.

Rachel Brodie

Rachel Brodie joined our board in 2021. Rachel’s career has seen her work in educational publishing and for the last ten years in large-scale B2B exhibitions and conferences, most recently as Divisional Managing Director at Hyve Group.

Rachel decided to become a trustee due to her personal connection to Haven House. Rachel’s son Isaac was born in 2016 with a mass on his brainstem that was sadly untreatable and incurable. Rachel and her husband Steven spent Isaac’s precious final days together at Haven House.

Rachel hopes that her personal experience with our hospice will enable her to share helpful insights into the future development of the support services we offer to carers. Rachel will also be a familiar face around the hospice meeting regularly with families at our coffee mornings.

“I became a trustee because I am passionate about community engagement and because Haven House holds a special place in my heart. I am keen to support the wonderful Haven House team as they continue to grow, develop and shape the future of care.

The care that we received from Haven House throughout Isaac's short life was absolutely wonderful, and it's hard to put into words just how much of a difference this made to us, transforming an absolutely impossible time into something bearable and, at times, truly incredible.

We were able to spend Isaac's last hours in private together, holding him close, singing to him, praying for him and making sure he knew he was loved and cherished more than anything. I hope my personal experience, together with my professional experience, means I can be a supporter, advisor, challenger and advocate for the hospice and contribute to its future success.”

Zebina Ratansi, MBE, RN, MSc

I am originally from Tanzania but have lived in England since I was 15 years old. London has been my home for many years.

I began my nursing career as an Enrolled Nurse at St George’s Hospital. I specialized in neurosciences at Atkinson Morley’s Hospital and later completed the conversion course to become a registered nurse. I then specialised in Critical Care Nursing and worked in several London hospitals. In 1997, I joined the Liver Unit at King's College Hospital and subsequently took on various senior Nursing Leadership roles. At King’s, I contributed to a chapter in the liver nursing textbook “Liver Disease: Essential Guide for Nurses and Health Care Professionals 2009.” During my time at King’s, one of my responsibilities was overseeing the responsiveness to patient deterioration. I introduced electronic vital signs recording and a track and trigger system. I also set up a critical care outreach team, called the I-mobile” team in response to maximising responsiveness to the deteriorating patient.

In April 2016, I joined Barts Health as the Director of Nursing for Whipps Cross Hospital. My remit was to ensure the delivery of safe and compassionate care under good governance. As part of the senior leadership team at Whipps Cross, I led the clinical improvement journey and was instrumental in the hospital's improved CQC rating.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I led the London Region's response to increasing capacity and capabilities, providing structure and protocols for nursing resources and care delivery models.

I was privileged to receive Member of British Empire (MBE) award for services to Nursing Leadership in June 2023, Silver Nursing Award from the Chief Nurse of England in 2022, Cavell Star June 2025 and Lifetime Achievement award from Bart’s Health on International Nurses Day May 2025.

Unfortunately, I also witnessed the emergence of corridor care in emergency department within acute hospitals, which was one of the most upsetting and disturbing care situations I have encountered in my career.

After 40 years of nursing, I retired from my post as Director of Nursing in July 2025.

Throughout my career, I have been a committed nurse and believe that nurses play a pivotal role in patient outcomes and service improvements.
