Stories Celebrating the heart of our hospice this Volunteers’ Week As Volunteers’ Week 2025 shines a national spotlight on those who give their time to make a difference, we are proud to celebrate the incredible dedication of our own volunteer community - the heartbeat of our hospice. Over the past year, an astounding 296 volunteers have given their time, energy, and compassion to support Haven House in countless ways - from helping in our retail shops, assisting at fundraising events, managing office duties to supporting sibling activity days, tending to our beautiful gardens, and more. Together, these amazing individuals logged a phenomenal 7,052 hours of service. To put that into perspective, if we had employed staff to cover those hours based on the London Living Wage, it would have cost our charity £97,670.62 - funds that, thanks to our volunteers, we’ve instead been able to invest directly into delivering vital care services for children and families. Sian Keirle, who helps in our Leytonstone shop, became a volunteer after being made redundant from her job in the city. You will often find her sorting out the bric-a-brac shelves. Sharing why she volunteers, she said: “After being made redundant, I wanted to do something meaningful - and supporting a local charity really appealed to me. I love being sociable, getting to know the regulars, and knowing that I’m doing something that helps others." Heulwen Evans who has been a Haven House volunteer for more than 20 years added: “Volunteering at Haven House has given me a sense of connection like no other. Knowing that every small act helps support children and families during such difficult times means the world to me. It’s not just about giving time; it’s about being part of a special community that truly cares and makes a real difference every day." Everything we do at Haven House has volunteers stitched into it. Their unwavering support not only helps us save valuable funds but also fosters caring communities and brings joy and comfort to the children and families who depend on us every day. “We simply couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers,” said Sarah Spackman, Director of Human Resources at Haven House. “Their generosity, kindness, and dedication touch every corner of our work - and for that, we are truly grateful.” As we mark this special week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every volunteer who has stood with us this year. You are all an essential part of the Haven House family, and we simply would not exist without you.
