In a remarkable display of love, strength, and solidarity, a group of friends from South Woodford came together to complete a mud run in celebration of their close friend, Connie Campbell, who had a brain tumour.

The Woodbridge High School pupils took on the Nuclear Races in Brentwood, a challenging course filled with obstacles, mud pits, and slides, all in support of Haven House - the children’s hospice that has supported Connie. The event was not just a test of endurance, but a testament to their friendship.

Connie, 13, was diagnosed with high-risk Melluloblastoma a brain tumour two years ago and was inspired to take on the muddy run by two-year old Orla Tuckwell, who had the same tumour diagnosis. The pair had met at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Connie’s mother Tina said: “Haven House gave Orla and her family the love they needed when she moved into palliative care. It’s a special place that needs all the support it can get to ensure families have everything they need in their darkest hour.

“It’s hard to put into words what the last two years have been like. There have been lots of emotional lows and extremely tough times, but we celebrate the achievements that Connie has made, and we are thankful for all the support we have, and that Connie was able to go out and complete the mud run and make memories with her family and friends. She’s a truly remarkable young girl who just wants to keep achieving.”

Connie successfully completed treatment in August 2023 and has spent the last year rebuilding herself and finding her new normal. Despite the challenging obstacles and muddy terrain, Connie demonstrated incredible determination, completing two rounds of the course with a smile, while raising funds for a cause close to her heart.

Connie, a keen dancer, added:

I thought I would only be able to complete the course once, but we managed to go round twice.  We took our time, and all stayed together we all had different fears but overcame them – we were so happy and proud of ourselves for completing the course and I had so much fun with my friends and are also so happy with the money we raised.
Her resilience and spirit, along with the support of her friends , helped her reach the finish line, all while raising £2,290 for the hospice. Haven House provides physical, emotional and practical support to seriously ill children and their families, whenever and wherever families need.

“We are incredibly moved by the dedication and support shown by this wonderful group of friends," said Sophie Bragg, Haven House’s Events Manager. “Their efforts will help us continue offering vital services to those who need it most. Well done girls. "
