Mum climbs Mount Kilimanjaro in honour of her son and to support local hospice A courageous mother has successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, to honour her son and raise vital funds for the hospice that provided him with exceptional care. Adrienne Church, 65, embarked on the challenging journey to the summit as a tribute to her son Alex, who was one of the first children to be cared for by Haven House Children’s Hospice over two decades ago. Alex passed away in 2016. “This climb was not just a personal challenge," Adrienne shared. "It was my way of celebrating my son’s incredible spirit and giving back to the hospice that gave us so much love, compassion, and support during the most difficult time of our lives. The whole trip was an incredible experience but the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.” The expedition, which took eight gruelling days, tested Adrienne’s endurance and determination as she trekked through rainforests, deserts, uneven moorland and faced steep ascents alongside the physical demands of high altitude. Despite these challenges, she triumphantly reached the top. Adrienne, from Essex, said: “It was the most difficult physical thing I have ever done, and my feet and legs felt the strain. I kept going knowing that I was raising money for Haven House where we received so much support for Alex and his two sisters through the sibling support group. I am totally surprised that I managed it and exhilarated with the whole experience especially at 65!” The incredible climb raised more than £7,400 for Haven House, the family’s local children’s hospice in Woodford Green, that relies on donations to provide free, specialist care to seriously ill children and their families. Rebecca Hancock, Haven House’s community and events officer expressed gratitude for Adrienne’s inspiring effort: “What Adrienne has achieved is truly extraordinary. Her climb will make a real difference, enabling us to continue offering compassionate care to local families in need.” Support Haven House Childrens Hospice Today Are you feeling inspired to take on your own personal challenge?
