Rocky inspires hundreds at Haven House Sparkle Walk The streets of Woodford were painted purple as more than 330 people came together to support Haven House Children’s Hospice during our annual Sparkle Walk - and at the heart of it all was six-year-old Rocky Myles, a shining example of resilience and strength. Rocky, who receives respite care from our hospice, was one of the youngest participants at the event. Cheered on by his proud brother Jenson, dad Rob, grandma Janet, auntie Karen and his dog Reggie, Rocky completed the 10km route with his mum Clare, crossing the finish line with determination and a smile. Rocky has a rare syndrome and has spent much of his early life in and out of hospital. The unpredictability of his condition means every milestone is celebrated - especially walking, which doctors once said might never happen. After months of physiotherapy, he took his first steps on his dad’s birthday. He now uses a wheelchair for long distances, but on Friday night, he proudly walked the final stretch of our Sparkle Walk, cheered on by his family and capturing the hearts of everyone watching. Clare, from Loughton, said: “I was so proud of Rocky - firstly, because he wanted to be part of the challenge, and second, because he did so well. Seeing his face as he crossed the finish line was incredible. He was so proud of himself, and it really showed. “To see Rocky take his steps, cheered on by so many people who love and support him - it’s something I’ll never forget. Haven House has been a lifeline for our family and today was a beautiful reminder of the community that surrounds us.” Each walker had their own reason - some joined friends, others celebrated milestones like birthdays - but all shared one purpose: supporting the children and families cared for by Haven House. This collective spirit transforming the walk into a powerful display of compassion and community. Joining the crowd of walkers was the Saparavicius family from Woodford. Mum Ramune, Dad Rytis, and their three children - Rebecca (9), Richard (8), and Raymond (6) - completed the course with bright smiles and sparkling decorations. They covered the 10km route in an incredibly fast time. “We truly believe that you rise by lifting others,” said Ramune. “Every step helps provide vital care for families facing the challenges of caring for a child with a serious illness. We’re proud to have raised over £700 so far and to stand alongside this wonderful community.” Haven House provides not only specialist care for children like Rocky, but also vital support for families through sibling support groups, dads' sessions, and grandparent gatherings - building a network of care that extends far beyond medical needs. The event began and ended at Woodford Rugby Club, where warm-up performances from Dance 21 from Woodford and the Rock Choir Wanstead set the tone for a joyful and emotional evening. Sponsored by Bowden Bradley Estate Agents and launched by newly elected Waltham Forest Mayor Tony Bell, the event has already raised an incredible £33,000 - with donations still coming in. Sophie Bragg, our events fundraising manager, said: “From the cheers at the finish line to the sea of purple winding through the streets, the walk was a moving reminder of how much can be achieved when a community comes together. Seeing Rocky take his steps, surrounded by love and applause, reminded all of us why we do what we do. Every pound raised, every step taken, helps us continue to be there for families when they need us most. “Haven House continues to provide vital care for seriously ill children and their families - and events like this help ensure that support never stops.” If you missed out this year, there’s good news: you can already register your interest for the Sparkle Walk 2026.
